The door opens… A deserted, cold and dark corridor. The goal is to reach the 4th floor.
1st floor – quite usual, nothing’s really happening but then… Suddenly, I hear some voices.
2nd floor – there’s a ribbon tied to the door handles with “WARNING!! WARNING!!” written on it.
3rd floor – the lighting is now turned reddish orange, the voices keep coming closer… My heart is beating loud… My whole body is shaking… It’s getting really scary…
4th floor – there’s a mysterious blueish green sphere next to the the door… It doesn’t seem dangerous or does it?
The voices, the voices… They’re just around the corner, right behind the wall a few meters away. Are they good or bad? I don’t know, I’d like to run away… I’m scared, the world beyond has caught me.
I step through the door… Everything stays silent… I find myself in a completely normal wardrobe. There’s no one there besides me. I take a few steps, hang my coat on the rack and head to the next room. It looks dark from far away but, stepping closer, I see a bright light shining in the corner. I hear the distant voices again… They keep on coming closer… Suddenly, a girl is standing in front of me. She’s dressed in all black and she’s wearing a flower crown. Her face is a bit odd, though. It’s bright white, her mouth has been stretched so far you can see all of her shiny teeth, there are dark lines under her eyes and her nose is pitch black.
She smiles at me and says: “Welcome!”. I greet her back and head on.
I’ve made it to the room that’s full of colours and lost souls. Are they alive? Are they dead? Why have they all gathered here? Where am I? Are they planning something evil?
I don’t know… Help! Different thoughts pass my mind. I notice that the whole room is colourful, several other doors and rooms can be seen, it feels like some kind of a labyrinth. It’s dimly lit, I find it hard to tell who’s who and what’s what. In addition to the voices, you can hear disco music playing in the background. Where am I? Why are the rooms full of colourful decorations and pictures…? It feels like a fiesta… A fiesta for dead people…
Lifeless and lost – they all look scary, crazy, mysterious, they don’t resemble people anymore, something has happened to them… But what? They’re unpredictable. I’m constantly feeling anxious about what’s going to happen next… There’s yelling, there’s threatening, there’s drinking, someone’s making them be this way…
Actually, I had reached the EBS Halloween party called “Noche de los muertos!”. This awesome and fierce event was organised by our student council event team. I talked to Rico Veskiväli, the manager of the event team about what went well and what didn’t.
Where did the party take place? (Time, date) / why did you decide to have it at ETK?
Noche de los Muertos took place on Saturday, the last day of October at ETK which is located in Telliskivi. During the past year, there have been several costume parties at ETK during Halloween and this year it was organized by EBS Student Council. In addition, ETK has an unique atmosphere and can fit a lot of people.
What was the biggest success of the party?
We decided to go for the theme inspired by the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead. We were hoping that enough people would show up in a costume and we could create a vibe similar to Mexico at our party. Fortunately, over 360 people showed up so an unforgettable Halloween was guaranteed.
What went completely wrong?
The Piňata we hung up did not survive for as long as we would’ve wanted it to.
Looking back now, If you could plan one thing differently, what would it be?
The information must move quickly inside the team while organizing a bigger event such as this one. Next time we’ll pay more attention to that.
Are you satisfied with the party?
The feedback has been very positive and that’s what we were going for. See you again soon!
