The life of an Erasmus student in Tallinn during Covid-19

PART I – The Arrival

My name is Filip Jukić, and I am an Erasmus student from Croatia.

Coming to Tallinn was my first choice on Erasmus destination list because I heard beautiful stories of the lovely Old Town, the beautiful nature surrounding Tallinn and of interesting Estonian culture.

When I arrived in Tallinn, it was night-time and everything was covered with snow. It was just as I imagined it would be, except for the cold weather, which took me some time to adjust to. In order to get to my accommodation from the airport, I called a taxi with an app called Bolt, which is the most popular taxi app among the students. The usual prices for a taxi are around 5 euros because Tallinn is a very small city. I was quite surprised to find out that the travel time from the airport to the hostel with a taxi was only 10 minutes! Therefore, I would suggest to all students to use Bolt because of cheap prices and good service.

The first month of my studies in Tallinn I was living in a cozy and artistic hostel situated in the city center. In the beginning, I did not know any other students, so I was exploring the Old Town and other breathtaking scenery by myself. I had great support from my buddy from EBS, who helped me with all the questions I had regarding my stay. After two weeks, I met other students from Germany, Italy, Iceland, and France. They all are exceptional and amazing people from whom I have already learned a lot, especially about a French rap musician named Jul.

After one month, I changed my accommodation to Larsen Apartments, where the other Erasmus people from EBS are staying at. Even during a lockdown you never get bored because you are surrounded by students from other countries.

My plan while in Tallinn, except for having fun with friends and exploring the country, is to do an internship in a Fintech startup as well.

To sum up, I would recommend Erasmus students to download Bolt (taxi app) and Bolt Food (food delivery app). It will ease their stay in Tallinn. And, of course, I would recommend bringing a lot of warm clothes because of the cold weather.
