EBS – a rising star in Ylisport!

Oh, ylisport… Estonian Academic Sports Federation (EASL) has been developing student sports activities for several years by organising various championships and super cool games lasting for several days. Universities should and do appreciate the ones who organise and lead these events. You can experience the awesome show first hand at the Student Summer and Winter Games. This year, the Third Student Winter Games took place on 26th-28th January.

What makes the games so awesome and special? First of all, the spirit of the students that’s gathered in a far-away location in Estonia for a few days. Secondly, all the cool people you can spend time with. Thirdly, all the fun sports such as mitten-basketball, rubber boot hockey, flipper run up the hill, pushing the sleighs up and down the hill and much more. Actually, the two latter were exhausting. In addition, all the fun theme parties guaranteed by the organisers. This year, the theme of the party was 2050 aka the futuristic Estonia. You could see a lot of shine and silver on the dance floor. We’re already looking forward to the next theme in order to start preparing for the party.

What makes us, the ambassadors of EBS sport, organise and invite ebsters to the games? Well… The emotion we have got from attending ourselves. The emotion is what we want to share with other ebsters and this year – especially – it could be felt strongly. Let’s get to the point now – EBS did remarkably well at this year’s Student Winter Games. Rising from the bottom to the top 6 universities was something no one saw coming. It was surprising even to the organisers when they were announcing the results. I just know it – you could hear if from the tone of their voice.

How did we manage to get the 6th place out of the 13 Estonian universities? It was all thanks to our 36 ambitious and eager-to-win ebsters. We managed to get to the top three in 6 out of 18 sports, including a first place by Karl Madisson in power skiing. A powerful guy who beat all the other male students by a country mile. Wow! Keep going and scoring all the first places! PS! For the people from other universities: he’s the guy whose Audi’s engine roar made all the walls in Kääriku Sport complex’s walls shake.

We reached second and third places as well. EBS came second in winter football defeating Estonian National Defense College and several others. The team consisted of  Randy Padar, Martin Mee, Karl Oskar Haak, Henry Vari, Kaidi Kammer and Marie Heleen Lisette Kikkas. Peeter Luik came second in both ski jumping and winter swimming. He scored a 4th place tie in the flipper run. Then the sleigh was pushed. Both up and down the hill. Birgit Uibu, Peeter Luik, Kristo Kompus, Peeter Kompus and Karl Oskar Haak managed to score an awesome 2nd place out of 8 participating teams. Our guy Braien Kasser came third playing poker. Kristo Kompus, Peeter Kompus, Peeter Luik and Angela Rannu scored a close second place in ski sprint relay. In skidisc – a very cool sport – the Kompus brothers came third. Every university also had the chance to pick their most valuable participant. EBS chose Kaidi Kammer – the woman who took part in so many sports that she made it home half-crippled. Get well soon, Kaidi! We’re all in this together!

Kaidi Kammer winter swimming!

What else can I say… I’m speechless. This year’s Winter Games went better than expected. Congratulations to all the participants and winners! I’m looking forward to seeing you at the Summer and next year’s Winter Games. I also encourage all the other ebsters to take part! I believe that the true student life goes hand in hand with sports and it’s something you must experience at least once in your lifetime. Without our amazing ebsters our school wouldn’t be so high up in the rankings. Together we can do it and it’s possible to score an even better place. To be the winners is our future goal. As I’ve said before, EBS students are winners – they just don’t know it.

EBS Student Council would like to thank CityMotors and Optimus System for transportation and EBS Gift Shop for the lovely hats, that kept our awesome participants warm.
